WHAT IS COLLATERAL? The library has many items that you may borrow to work on school projects: colored pencils, markers, rulers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, etc. At the Circulation Desk, please ask a library staff member to borrow these items. In return, they will ask you for collateral...
HOW DO I GET INTO THE LIBRARY? The library is available during all periods for silent study. As long as you can find a chair or stool to sit on, you are welcome to stay and work quietly in the library.
CAN I EAT/DRINK IN THE LIBRARY? You may have plain bottled water, but you cannot eat or drink anything else in the library. We will confiscate your goodies! Please enjoy your lunch in the Student Center.
HOW DO I CHECK OUT A BOOK? Please bring your ID card and check out at the Circulation Desk. Books may be checked out for 2 weeks. Reference books are available for overnight checkout after 7th period and must be returned by 7:25 a.m. the next day. Some textbooks are available for checkout for use in the library only.

HOW FAR BACK DO YOUR MAGAZINES GO? The New York Times goes back to 1851. Many magazines go back to 1960, or earlier.
WHERE DO YOU KEEP ALL OF THEM? In the Periodical Room. Most have been converted to microfiche, so you have to use a reader.
HOW DO I GET OLD ISSUES OF THE NY TIMES? An RHS Library Staff member can assist you in using the printed indexes in the periodicals room. We will retrieve the requested microfiche card or microfilm reel and instruct you in the use of the reader-printers. More recent issues are available online through our online databases. You can also see back issues on some of our library databases.
IS THERE A QUIET PLACE TO STUDY? Yes, the entire RHS Library is a place for quiet study. The library is an academic space ideal for studying, reading and working.
CAN I GET TO THE DATABASES FROM HOME? Yes. Please refer to the handout "HOME ACCESS PASSWORDS" for web addresses, user IDs and passwords. You don’t need a password from this building. Simply access the databases using the star icon named "RHS Databases" on the school computer desktops.
