Software.
PhotoStory -- is an excellent program for creating dynamic slide shows using your digital pictures along with music and narrations.
Google Earth & Picassa. Use this to install GoogleEarth and/or Picassa.
Audacity -- Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. Click here for the download. A Mac version is available from the website.
Mac/Apple Resouces.
Since 1999 and the introduction of the UNIX-based OSX operating system, the Apple Mac has been a solid, reliable and easy-to-use computer platform. A nice feature is the ability to run Windows on a Mac for the best of both worlds. Apple software, such as QuickTime and iTunes, runs equally well on either platform.
iTunes - (Mac/PC; free) this program allows you to catalog your music; purchase music by the song or album; rent or purchase movies and television shows; listen to a wide variety of Internet-based radio stations throughout the world; and listen to/watch Podcasts. Podcasts can be a recorded lecture (from MIT, for example) or informational/instructional content from professionals and amateurs from around the world. There are many educational resources available by using iTunes.

NeoOffice - NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office (NeoOffice website).

Templates Home -- let the Microsoft designers do the formatting for you. There are excellent designs to help with all aspects of managing your classroom including a wide variety of subject-specific items such as lab reports or planning/writing stories.
Alternatives to Microsoft Office - CNET article; OpenOffice, Google Docs (web-based).
WordPerfect can access Word files with the proper updates. WordPerfect support.
